Wife. Was he really thinking of her in those terms? Thinking of happy-ever-after? He was getting ahead of himself. He had to take this one slow. Justin Murphy, husband and father. That would take some getting used to. Some major retooling of his thought processes. And even if he succeeded in rewiring his own brain, there was still the matter of the Grosso dragons to slay.

Metaphorically, of course. The last thing he needed was for his wooing of the NASCAR princess to come to a knock-down, drag-out, no-holds-barred battle with Dean and Kent Grosso—and for all he knew, old Milo, too.

Him, a dragonslayer. Who’d have figured? He felt as if he’d been gut-punched. He had to think about this some more. “Come on then. Let’s get the princess back in her million-dollar tower before all the Grosso dragons wake up and find the ogre’s stolen her away,” he said, hoping she’d take it as a joke.

She didn’t. “Why do you keep saying things like that, Justin? I’m here, aren’t I?” He heard the hurt in her voice and it shamed him in his very soul. “I came of my own free will. Despite what you think. I’m leaving because I think it’s best for me…and for you…not because I’m afraid of my family.”

Her family. His family. It always came down to that between them, and it always would. “I’m sorry, Sophia.” He ran his finger along the soft skin of her throat. “I shouldn’t have put you in this position. I shouldn’t have brought you in here at this time of night. It won’t happen again. You have my word.” He reached out his hand and helped her stand.

“Oh, don’t be so melodramatic,” she said, scowling up at him. “I told you, I came in here of my own free will.
